The CEO caught on surveillance video kicking a small dog has resigned, his company announced Tuesday.
Desmond Hague, the outgoing CEO of Centerplate, a major sports catering company based in Stamford, Conn., left his post following several days of intense backlash over the video, Centerplate said in a statement. The company named Chris Verros, the company's chief operating officer under Hague, as acting CEO.

"We want to reiterate that we do not condone nor would we ever overlook the abuse of animals," said Joe O'Donnell, chairman Centerplate's board of directors, in a statement. "Following an extended review of the incident involving Mr. Hague, I'd like to apologize for the distress that this situation has caused to so many...."

Last month, video surfaced showing Hague kick a small dog in a hotel elevator and then yanking on its leash. The video came from a hotel elevator in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was first broadcast by Canadian news outlet Global News.
Centerplate has catering contracts with all four major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada. Last week, the company put Hague on probation and ordered him to donate $100,000 toward animal abuse prevention.
The earlier decision to punish—but not fire—Hague over the animal abuse scandal sparked outrage among animal rights supports and sports fan alike.
